Till now, a customer has to mandatorily use a valid debit card number for OTP authentication to set up a PIN while registering on a UPI application. This process restricts access for many bank account holders who do not have a debit card handy, mentioned PhonePe in a press release.

PhonePe users who want to use this Aadhaar-based authentication, have to enter the last six digits of their Aadhaar number to initiate the onboarding process.

Then, they will receive an OTP from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), and their respective bank to complete the authentication process. Post this, customers will be able to access all UPI features such as payments and checking the balance in the bank account on the PhonePe App.

“We believe this is a very progressive move by RBI, NPCI, and UIDAI and is a great example of the digital financial inclusion that UIDAI’s Aadhaar program has been able to drive. This will help expand the overall UPI ecosystem, and also onboard new customers to the digital payments fold,” said Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe.
