huid: What is Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number in gold jewellery

Must read

Gold hallmarking was made mandatory by the government last year. This was done with the aim of avoiding misselling of gold jewellery. The BIS mark will be on gold jewellery that has been hallmarked by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating that its purity has been validated in one of the BIS’s certified laboratories.

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs website, hallmark consists of 3 symbols which give you some information. In this, the first symbol is the BIS logo, the second symbol indicates purity and fineness and the third symbol is the HUID. Before buying any piece of gold jewellery you have to see all these 3 symbols.

What is HUID number?

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs website, the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit Alphanumeric code made up of letters and digits. Every item of jewellery will be issued a HUID number at the moment of hallmarking, and each one will be unique. At the Assaying & Hallmarking centre, the jewellery is hand stamped with the unique number.

HUID

A unique identifier (HUID) is assigned to each piece of jewellery, allowing for traceability. It’s crucial for Hallmarking’s legitimacy and dealing with complaints about the purity of Hallmarked jewellery.

In HUID-based Hallmarking, jewellers are automatically registered without the need for human intervention. Its purpose is to ensure the purity of Hallmarked jewellery and to detect any fraud. HUID is a safe system that doesn’t jeopardise data privacy or security, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

So make sure to check and keep your HUID handy when checking through this app. While you can also check to verify other standard products with ISI mark.

How to check authenticity of gold jewellery using BIS Care app

According to a tweet on the BIS’s official Twitter account, one can check authenticity of hallmarked jewellery by using ‘verify HUID’ feature on the BIS Care App.

The app can be downloaded from the Google store and is available in Hindi and English language.

After downloading the app, consumers should refer to the “check licence details” area to verify the legitimacy of products with the ISI brand. They should proceed to the “verify HUID” area if it was for hallmarked jewellery.
