Use India as global manufacturing base: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the business reforms undertaken by his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met top business leaders in Japan as part of his two-day visit to the country as he asked the corporates to Make in India, not only for meeting domestic demand, but also for world markets.
Chairing a roundtable with the Japanese business leaders, Modi met top executives and CEOs of 34 Japanese companies, apart from having individual meetings with heads of companies such as Suzuki Motor Corp (parent of Maruti Suzuki), SoftBank, NEC, and Fast Retailing (parent of Uniqlo). Modi apprised the Japanese business leaders of the reforms undertaken, especially the steps taken to improve the ease of doing business.
“Met top business leaders in Tokyo. Our conversations focused on diverse topics ranging from innovation to investments, tech to textiles, reforms to startups. There is great enthusiasm towards India and there is great appreciation for the entrepreneurial skills of India’s youth,” the PM said.
Modi met Suzuki Motor’s senior adviser Osamu Suzuki, and recalled the latter’s association and contribution in India, while appreciating the transformational role of the company in India’s automotive industry.
In his meeting with Masayoshi Son, board director and founder of SoftBank, the PM appreciated the company’s role in India’s startup sector. With Nobuhiro Endo, chairman of NEC Corporation, the PM appreciated the company’s role in telecommunication sector, especially in Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) and Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands (KLI) optical fibre projects. Modi and Tadashi Yanai — chairman, president & CEO of Fast Retailing (parent of Uniqlo) — discussed the rapidly-growing textile and apparel market of India.
